An exploration of the social element of environmental, social, and governance (ESG).
Sustainability is a growing concern for many businesses. Conscientious businesses increasingly seek vendors aligned with their values and uphold the highest standards of integrity, particularly on sustainability.
This shift is evident in the evolution of purchasing and supply chain practices, with organizations now placing a premium on sustainability throughout their supply chains, both upstream and downstream. This entails not only ensuring the sustainability of their own operations but also holding suppliers and partners to the same rigorous standards.
ESG stands for Environmental, Social, and Governance. The "S" in ESG refers to social factors, which encompass a broad range of considerations related to people and communities. Social sustainability focuses on the well-being of people and communities. This includes promoting equity, social justice, labor practices, community engagement, and human rights.
ESG considerations are sometimes referred to as the triple bottom line. This refers to the three key factors that companies should consider when measuring their overall success "people, planet, and profit." In other words, companies take into account their impact on society, the environment, and its financial bottom line when evaluating their performance.
At TES, we're proud to lead by example, setting stringent guidelines and holding ourselves and our partners accountable for their actions. We established goals and initiated positive actions on social sustainability. These are included in our latest Sustainability Report and reinforce our position as an industry leader and supplier of choice. These include actions within our own business and throughout our supply chain, including our downstream vendor relationships.
Within our own businesses, TES is taking action on:
- employee engagement and satisfaction,
- health and safety,
- training and development,
- corporate social responsibility, and
- diversity and inclusion.
For downstream suppliers and subcontractors, TES has established a Supplier Code of Conduct program and is working to have all key suppliers and partners covered under the program. That code states that “TES is a responsible citizen of every country in which TES does business, our integrity is non-negotiable. TES is committed to the highest labour standards, human rights, health and safety, quality control and environment, and ethical conduct. TES requires its suppliers to have a similar commitment.”
To achieve a sustainable supply chain, we are engaging with our vendors and partners to promote high standards and sustainable practices. This is done by setting clear social and environmental sustainability objectives, monitoring performance, and supporting with education and training. Having a sustainable supply chain is essential for TES to meet the needs of our biggest customers, manage business risk, and maintain a competitive advantage.
